Hey, TJ, great to hear from you last month. Thought you'd be interested in this item about Don Behm... it is really the pinnacle of wrestling and I am so happy for him. Think other classmates might be interested? I'll stay in touch. Pete
REUNION COMMENTS:
Hi, Sue:
Just wanted to pass along my appreciation for the tremendous job you did
organizing the reunion. I attended at the last minute, thanks to
some
encouragement from Rudi Berkelhamer -- and I am so grateful that I did. It
was a wonderful, warm and affirming experience that has stayed with me every
day since. It was amazing how easily we picked up where we left off and
also forged new connections that were strengthened by virtue of a shared
past.
I truly appreciate your facilitating what turned out to be a fascinating and
important journey. Many, many thanks.
Vicki (Lassar) Solot
Hi ! I am sorry I missed the
reunion, but I just didn't know about it. I had an emergency procedure for
a detached retina on October 3 and a preventive procedure on the other eye on
October 21, so I probably would have ended up canceling anyway. I am
almost completely recovered now.

Pre-Reunion:
FROM
OWEN YOST:
Dear New Trier friends,
I apologize for putting this off so long, but I finally gathered the initiative
to say I can't come to the reunion. I would very much like to see you all
and trade glimpses of our pasts, but my son comes first. You see, there's
a good chance he'll be returning from Iraq that weekend (the next possibility is
late Dec.), and I'll be at Ft. Bragg, NC. I'll miss you all very
much, but you can understand that I'd crawl over broken glass to be with my
son.
I've attached part of a recent letter
from him, for those who believe everything CNN says;

I would love to be able
to come to the reunion. We have a five month old granddaughter that will
be baptized on Sunday the 12th in Baton Rouge, La. Family always comes
first. I am very interested at this time of my life to make a reconnection
to those of my past. If anyone would like to reconnect that remembers me
please email me at bobntrishclarke@cs.com. I hope everyone that attends
the 40th reunion will have a wonderful time being together again. Wish I
could come.
God Bless all of you, Patricia (Pat) Willhite Clarke

For East
Lansing's Don Behm, carrying the Olympic torch brought back special memories--he
won a silver medal as a member of the U.S. wrestling team in the 1968 Summer
Olympics in Mexico City.
EAST LANSING--Olympic competition brings back
special memories for Don Behm, who teaches physical education at Marble
Elementary School and coaches the East Lansing High School wrestling team.
Behm won a silver medal for the United States as a 125-pound freestyle wrestler
in the 1968 Summer Olympic Games in Mexico City. His silver was one of only two
medals the U.S. wrestling team won in 1968.
"As time goes by, being on the Olympic team and winning the silver medal
certainly becomes bigger to me," he said.
On Jan. 6, he enjoyed the honor of carrying the Olympic torch in East Lansing.
But the real excitement for Behm came when he saw the Olympic flame reach its
final destination in Salt Lake City and seeing the drama and competition unfold
at the Winter Games.
"I really appreciate the athletes and the amount of fire and passion and
the magnitude of effort they have invested to participate in the Olympics,"
he said. "There are no shortcuts to success at this level. I used to work
out at least six hours every day. The kind of effort needed to compete is
mind-boggling."
Behm, recruited out of high school in Illinois to join Coach Grady Peninger's
Michigan State University wrestling team, had a single focus: "I wanted to
be the best in the world."
As a 130-pound senior at MSU in 1967, he led the Spartans to an NCAA team
championship while winning an NCAA individual title in his weight class. After
winning the silver medal, he continued to compete all over the globe, taking a
second place in the 1969 world championships and winning a gold medal in the
1971 Pan-American Games. He later coached U.S. wrestling teams.
As a teacher, he can relate to the Olympic motto, "Light the fire
within."
"When I see the light go on in one of my students, I know that's why I
teach," Behm said. "It's really rewarding to share your knowledge with
kids and help motivate them to achieve their maximum."

This interesting information about the New Trier/Evanston football rivalries was sent in by Sue (Giallombardo) Walker...
Subject: NT vs ETHS---Sue:
this article appeared in today's
paper. I thought
that you might get a "kick" out of it (no pun intended!). Loren
Great article in this morning's Sun-Times:
New Trier, Evanston set for their 90th consecutive game October 18,
2002 BY STEVE TUCKER STAFF REPORTER
The oldest football rivalry in the state is Hyde Park-Englewood, which
started in 1889. The most enduring is East Aurora and West Aurora,
which have met continuously since 1893. But both pale in comparison to the
storied North Shore wars between Evanston and New Trier. On Friday, the Central Suburban South rivals will meet in
Northfield for the 90th year in a row. Both teams have struggled. Evanston is
4-3 and hoping to make the state playoffs after going 3-15 the last two seasons.
New Trier is 3-4 and has to win its last two games to qualify. For years, in the
days before television, the Evanston-New Trier game was played on
Thanksgiving morning at Northwestern.
The first game in 1913 was won by Evanston 31-13. The Wildkits were led by quarterback John "Paddy''Driscoll, who played at Northwestern and with the Decatur Staleys and Chicago Cardinals, who he also coached. In 1956-57, Driscoll was the Bears' head coach. The first game I saw was No. 50 and it was one of the best. It was 1962. Evanston was ranked No. 1. Under legendary coach Murney Lazier, who was 127-15-4 in 18 years (how many other coaches do you know of that have more seasons than losses?), the Wildkits were unbeaten and had a 26-game winning streak that covered more than three years. New Trier was coached by Walt Aschenbach, who spent 44 years at New Trier. The Indians (since renamed theTrevians) ran a single wing.
There were more people than I had ever seen at a high school game. Fans were six to eight deep circling the field. New Trier scored first, but Evanston answered and led 7-6 at halftime. But behind fullback John "Ram'' Roach, New Trier scored two second-half touchdowns to win 20-7. As fans stormed the field, the goalposts came down. "In that second half, New Trier came out and ran 20 plays in a row without making a mistake,'' Lazier said. "Their fullback [Roach] kept running a plunge. "It was fierce, tre-mendous competition, but it wasn't built on hate. I never had to psyche the kids up. They were ready. The games were always a battle, always crucial.''
The 1962 game was also the first for Chick Cichowski, who
later became New Trier's head coach. In 21 seasons, he was 145-46-1.
"It was one of my fondest memories,'' said Cichowski, a Lane Tech grad who
played pro football for the Steelers, Redskins and in Canada. "I'll never
forget that game. It was my first year of teaching and my first year of coaching
[the New Trier sophomores]. "It was great football and a great
rivalry. We never had a problem getting the kids up. The problem was, they were
always thinking about Evanston a week or more before the game.''
